Who is a good candidate for TMS?

TMS, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. It is primarily used to treat depression that has not responded to other psychiatric treatments. It is also being studied for other mental health conditions like anxiety, PTSD, and certain neurological disorders like Parkinson’s disease.

A good candidate for TMS meets some of these conditions:

Treatment-Resistant Depression: They have been diagnosed with depression that has not responded adequately to at least one antidepressant medication.

Cannot Undergo Electroconvulsive Therapy: Some individuals may not be able to undergo ECT due to medical conditions or personal preferences. TMS Therapy can be a suitable alternative for them.

Someone With No Metal Implants: The person should not have metal implants or objects in or around the head, as the magnetic fields used in TMS Therapy can interfere with these.

No Seizure History: While TMS Therapy is generally safe, it is not recommended for individuals with a history of seizures or certain neurological conditions that increase the risk of seizures.

Willingness to Commit to Treatment Schedule: TMS typically requires daily sessions over several weeks, so the person should be willing and able to commit to an aggressive schedule to meet success.
